The Bee Problems

The recent outbreak of Colony Collapse Disorder ( CCD ) was reported and commented on by the following organizations and scientists; Pennsylvania University, Capitol Press, Washington State Beekeepers Association, Dr. Steve Sheppard (Apiculturist at Washington State University), “Bee Culture”, “The American Bee Journal” and other technical publications.

Although it is acknowledged, and being researched, CCD is not clearly and definitively identified, and there is no effective treatment recommended or approved at this time.

In the 1980’s in Texas and in Wisconsin we discovered that north America was being invaded by the Asian mites “Varroa Jacobsoni” and “Acarapis Woodi”. As we quickly learned these particular foreign mite species kill our honeybees. They do it on a scale only imagined in Science Fiction movies. Beekeepers with 8000 hives or more have lost up to 99% of their hives in a single season.

The California Almond Industry may well be in trouble securing the bees needed to effectively pollinate the crops. To this date, there is no effective way of controlling these mite infestations without the use of contaminating chemical products.
